Senator Tillis Drops Opposition to Kevin Warsh After DOJ Ends Powell Probe
North Carolina Republican Senator Thom Tillis has withdrawn his conditional support for Kevin Warsh's confirmation following the Justice Department's decision to terminate its investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. Tillis had previously demanded assurances that the DOJ wasn't weaponizing its authority to intimidate the central bank.
The senator secured commitments from DOJ officials over the weekend, confirming the probe's conclusion. "We worked extensively to verify the DOJ wasn't threatening Fed independence," Tillis told NBC. This clears the path for Warsh's confirmation before Powell's term expires on May 15.
The DOJ formally closed the investigation on Friday, redirecting scrutiny of Fed building cost overruns to Inspector General Michael Horowitz. Tillis emphasized the finality of the decision: "The current investigation is completely and fully ended."
